Building AI for High-Consequence Environments

As a ServiceNow developer working in the Federal/Public Sector, I’ve noticed that when mistakes are made, even small ones, they have the potential to lead to dramatic consequences. All the hard work that goes into delivering a feature can be overshadowed by a single mistake, such as exposing sensitive data, granting broader access than intended, or unintentionally changing critical business logic. In these environments, a single oversight can erode trust, introduce security risks, and require far more time and effort to remediate than it took to build the feature in the first place. When this happens, it immediately reframes the mindset of a developer from “How can we build more capability, even faster?” to “How can we confidently deliver value without introducing unnecessary risk?”. In high-consequence environments, success isn’t measured solely by what a team is able to deliver, but by how safely and reliably they deliver it.

When I think about the current rise of AI, I keep coming back to this same principle. Organizations are investing heavily in increasingly capable models, but capability alone doesn’t guarantee value when those systems operate without the right governance, guardrails, and oversight. I recently saw this philosophy reflected firsthand while completing the ServiceNow Professional AI Application Developer path. Features like AI Agent Studio, AI Skills, evaluation tools, and human approval workflows demonstrate how ServiceNow approaches enterprise AI, not by simply maximizing what AI can do, but by helping organizations automate work while maintaining governance and reducing organizational risk.

Consider a ServiceNow AI agent responsible for helping employees reset passwords. Instead of granting the agent unrestricted administrative access, it could invoke a dedicated AI Skill that performs the reset through an approved workflow. If the request meets predefined conditions, it can be completed automatically. Or, if it falls outside those boundaries, such as repeated failed verification attempts or a privileged account, the workflow can route the request to a human for review before any action is taken. Seeing these kinds of controls built into enterprise AI gives me greater confidence in adopting and developing AI for environments where the cost of failure is high. 

As industries continue to incorporate increasingly capable AI into their operations, it’s important to remember that enterprise AI isn’t about maximizing autonomy at all costs. It’s about intentionally constraining autonomy, applying the right guardrails, and striking the appropriate balance between autonomy and risk. As developers, we should prioritize building systems that make it easy for humans to review decisions, intervene when necessary, and catch mistakes before they become high-consequence failures.
